How do you edit?

Really now, do you write to paper or word program and transfer it here?

Are you lucky in that you can write in a “finished” format?

It’s maddening for me.  Probably part of my Capricorn perfectionist nature and not letting anything go.

But I write and edit.  I hit the publish button and find in all cases, I edit for another hour…it’s not what I wanted to say.  This and that needs better punctuation. This and that words is not quite right.

Look at it again an hour later and shit there is another mistake another word that needs to be fixed…..

What is up with that?

How do you cure this affliction?

When I make something with my beadwork and let it go off to someone else, I get out this beading rattle I have. The rattle is supposed to vibrate out my attachments to this thing I created and allow it to have its own existence and destiny apart from my own. I use this rattle because I am weaving…and weaving, you may know, is something that threads the making into what’s made. It wraps my destiny inextricably into the weaving if I don’t extract myself from it. Its a mental exercise really…but I can tell you that I am frequently quite startled by seeing something I’ve made and given away. I truly do not remember it. Its like seeing an old friend whom I’d forgotten about from some distant part of my past.

This crafting exercise taught me a valuable lesson in giving my creations their own destiny and meaning…taking my assumptions and value judgments out of it. As a result, I have been able to apply this same thing to my writing to some degree…at least with blogging. Can’t seem to apply it with my book…which means I never seem to publish.
